FEBRUARY 25 ARRESTEES COURT DATE

The 15 defendants arrested at 2 am on February 25, during the protest against the missile launch, will be arraigned at 8:30 am on May 17 in Santa Barbara Federal Bankruptcy Court, 1415 State St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. Defendents include, Daniel Ellsberg, David Krieger, Judy Talaugon, Cynthia Papermaster, Nicola Torbett, Webb Mealy, Carolee Krieger, Leslie Angeline, Lynn Hamilton, Bradley Capshaw and Cindy Sheehan. Fr Louie Vitale and Mark Kelso will be arraigned on June 21. Please join us in court for support. Be sure to have photo ID for admission.

MARCH 1 ICBM TEST POSTPONED

Vandenberg AFB officials announced today (Tuesday) that the Minuteman III ICBM test launch for March 1 has been postponed, with no new date announced, due to “technical” reasons.

Vandenberg Air Force Base plans yet another Minuteman III ICBM test on March 1, 2012, the 58th anniversary of the Castle Bravo / Bikini Atoll test. Castle Bravo was the code name given to the first U.S. test of a dry-fuel thermonuclear hydrogen bomb, detonated on March 1, 1954 at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, the first test of Operation Castle. The Castle Bravo test had an explosive yield of 15 megatons, which is 1,000 times the power of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. The Bravo test caused widespread damage to numerous atolls in the Marshall Islands that is still felt to this day. The Marshall Islands also happened to be the target of this Minuteman missile test. ICBM MISSILE TEST LAUNCH FEBRUARY 25, 2012

On Feb 24 and 25 protests are planned around the world to demand a halt to the Vandenberg ICBM test launch. In Santa Barbara, Daniel Ellsberg and David Krieger will hold a press conference and rally on Feb 24 at 11 am to demand a halt. At midnight (11:55 pm Feb 24) at front gate protest will be held at Vandenberg Space Command six miles north of Lompoc on the central California coast. In the Los Angeles area, please join the Los Angeles Women’s Intenational League for Peace and Freedom for a 12 NOON protest at the Space and Missile tracking center, 262 N. Douglas, El Segundo, which is key to the launch. Thanks to a grant from WILPF, we have support for the Green Tortoise charter bus from the Bay area to Vandenberg. Catholic Workers are FREE and subsidies are available for anyone who cannot afford the full fare of $40 (round trip). The Green Tortoise leaves West Oakland BART at 5 pm, leaves San Jose Diridon/ Amtrak/ Caltrain station at 6:30 pm, leaves Salinas Amtrak Station at 7:30- 8 pm, depending on traffic (safe overnight parking available). The bus return trip will leave Lompoc/ Vandenberg at 1:15 to 1:30 am February 25 (that is two hours not two days) It will arrive in Salinas about 5 am, San Jose 6:30 am, and West Oakland BART at 7:30 am. MacGregor Eddy and L.A. Catholic Worker Theo Kayser have a Nov 17, 2011 court appearance at 8:30 am at Federal Bankruptcy Court, 1415 State St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. This appearance is for an arrest on 7/27/2011 and 8/6/2011 respectively. L.A. Catholic Worker Jesse Lewis and Guadalupe Catholic Worker Mariah Klusmire have a December 15 court date, and L.A. Catholic Worker Jeff Dietrich has a January 19 court date all for the August 6 witness..

MONTHLY VIGILS

Monthly vigils are held at the Main Gate of Vandenberg Air Force Base, on Hwy 1, the first Wednesday of each month. Vigil times are from 4:00 to 5:00 pm during Pacific Daylight Time, and from 3:00 to 4:00 pm during Pacific Standard Time.

HEARING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 15

A hearing will take place on September 15, 2011 in the trial of Fr. Stephen Kelly, S.J., Fr. Louis Vitale, O.F.M. and Dennis Apel. The three were arrested and charged with trespassing at Vandenberg Air Force Base on November 3, 2010. They have submitted a Motion to Dismiss the charges and the September 15 hearing, before U.S. Magistrate Rita Coyne-Federman, will be to decide whether or not the charges will be dropped.
The hearing will be at at 1:30 pm at Federal Bankruptcy Court, located at 1415 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
