Five of six Catholic Workers arrested on Nagasaki Day, August 9, appeared for arraignment in Santa Barbara Federal Court today and received a pleasant surprise…the federal prosecutor told the judge that we are not worth the time and cost to the government and recommended that the charges be dropped. The visiting judge complied. This is very strange since the federal prosecutor has a history of pushing for heavy fines and jail time for all Catholic Workers. This time, no time, no fine. YES!! We will accept any victory, especially believing that we would get jail time for this action since the temporary judge in that court has recently been issuing jail time to all resisters who have appeared before him. UPDATE: The sixth resister from this action, Karan Founds-Benton (third from right), received a letter stating her charges also were dropped.
